I mean, it is hard not to wonder about that band name! But the songs have been pretty great and often truly unique. On their February release, L.W. (which is a followup to their earlier K.G. - see the theme?), they really nailed it. Tons of great tunes, but the epic *Ataraxia* is my favorite. I guess "ataraxia” is defined as “calmness untroubled by mental or emotional disquiet” by Merriam Webster. It means that you’re mentally at peace, which would be a good place to be these days, wouldn't it?

Jonathan Arnoldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04953374030516995518noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9134255626935353190.post-12155888229334662752019-05-01T16:00:00.000-04:002019-05-01T16:00:09.255-04:00The Exbats - Everybody Loves My Mom

How cool is this? It is a father / daughter band called The Exbats - Inez plays the drums and is the lead singer, while dad Ken is the guitar player. Toss in a bass player and you have some incredibly hooky garage punk sounds that I just adore. I bet they put on a grand show. Their debut album, E Is For Exbats is just a joy and immediately found its way to my Top Albums of 2019. Absolutely impossible to not smile listening to their songs.

Dido, the former lead singer of Faithless, has come out with her first album in 6 years, Still On My Mind and wow, is it fantastic! An ethereal yet powerful voice, she strings together some great melodies with deeply felt lyrics. All the songs seem to tell a personal story. It has quickly found a place on my repeat listening for 2019. Wonder if I can get my act together enough to catch her at the House of Blues in June?

Hard to pick just one song, so I will toss a few out there for you.

First up is Hurricanes, where she sings about facing up to a storm of feelings:

But I think if I had to pick one song, and that’s the one that goes on my favorite singles so far of 2019, it would have to be Give You Up, another song about emotions. In some ways it echos the fantastic 10cc song, I’m Not In Love, with lyrics like:

Got your picture covering up the cracks on the wall

But the lines won’t fade

Didn’t think that I would be missing you at all

Maybe that was my mistake

So I am nearly done listening to my epic Google Music AllMusic.com Editors' Choice playlist for February 2019 - over 150 songs and more than 10 hours of music. You can find it here:

AllMusic 2019-02 Playlist

I try to do this every month. I go to the AllMusic.com Editors' Choice page for the month and grab 3 "track picks" from every Pop/Rock, Folk, Country, Blues and Electronic album on the list. It gives me great exposure to all kinds of sounds I just won't hear anywhere else. And these days, most every album on the list is available streaming from somewhere. Sometimes there are new compilations that aren't streaming, like February's The Complete Singles 1970-1980 double CD set for Gordon Lightfoot, or Michael Rother's Solo, a 4 CD retrospective. But these I can usually pull together some samples from previous releases.

One of my favorite's so far from the February list is Perfect Son's debut solo album Cast. Perfect Son is Tobiasz Biliński, a Polish musician and this album is a great sounding prog / electronic rock album with lush sounds and some deep rhythm. I can't wait to dive into it further. All three songs on my list are really great sounding, but if I had to pick one, it would be So Divine. The cover is a little odd looking, but the sounds from within are dynamite!

But that doesn't mean the other songs weren't great too. Here's Lust:

One of my favorite tunes from 2018 is Pronoun’s Wrong. Pronoun is, to quote Allmusic.com, “[t]he confessional pop project of Alyse Vellturo”, whatever that means. Guess she grew up here in Boston and graduated from the Berklee College of Music before she went to New York. No albums yet, really, but a couple great songs. I love the sweeping hook on Run:

But even better is the great catchy chorus of Wrong:

and you cant go backwards
guess i couldn’t ever relate
now im sitting feeling sorry
for somebody that i hate
and it feels so wrong
and it feels so wrong

Check it out. And I hope she comes back home soon for a show or 3, because I will definitely try to check it out.

Let’s get back on the Vehement Flame bandwagon, shall we? It’s been awhile, but I’m going to try and post at least 2 or 3 times a week. I created a Google Music playlist for the AllMusic.com’s Favorite Indie Pop and Rock Albums, as I had missed creating my usual monthly playlist for a few months during the summer. It didn’t really add to much to my own list of top singles but there were a few additions. One of them was from the Mind Spiders’ January release, Furies. Oddly enough, this “Best of 2018” release didn’t even make their own Editors Choice list for January 2018!

Mind Spiders seems to be the work of mostly one man, Mark Ryan. According to the Dirtnap Records Bandcamp page for the album “Furies is their most electronic album yet”. The nice driving beats really9 get my feet a-tappin and I really enjoyed several of the cuts on it. A good example is Never Like That:

But I think my favorite cut is the short, pulsing, driving Deserve:

I’ll be looking for more from Mr. Ryan in the future!

Illuminati Hotties is a project of LA artist Sarah Tudzin and I just love their sound. Once again, jangly guitars and a slow burn through Patience grabbed my attention the first time I heard it. Not sure she’ll ever get out east, but man, I bet she puts on a great show. Their first full length, Kiss Yr Frenemies just came out and you can bet I will be listening to the rest of the songs!

I’ve always been a big fan of St. Vincent (Annie Clark). Her 2009 album Actor brought her to my ears and she has never left. Last year’s Masseduction was fantastic. She recently released a remake of the song Slow Disco from that album and wow, is it hot, in more ways than one! She brings a sultry disco beat and a steaming hot video for it. She is just so talented!

Indian Queens is a dark, gothic, atmospheric indie band from East London. I guess they have been doing a few big shows, like Robert Smith’s curated 2018 Meltdown show. I really like the sweeping vocals, big guitars and catchy riff from this tune, Pretty Little Thing :

Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t posted a song from one of my albums of 2017! I’m not really much of a head banger, but every year there are one or two pretty hard core metal albums that get to me. Last year, it was definitely New York rockers In This Moment’s Ritual. It starts off with some intense big drums, chanting and gonging bells on Salvation, seques into one of the finest rockers from all of year with Oh Lord, then into a weird homage to Billy Idol’s White Wedding called, not surprisingly, Black Wedding. Then we get the dark and brooding cover of Phil Collins’ In The Air Tonight. Wow - what a run!

Here’s a fantastic version of Black Wedding. To show you how little I know of the heavy metal scene, the song title says “(feat. Rob Halford)” and I didn’t even know that he is the lead singer of Judas Priest! But he shows up in this live video for Loudwire Music Awards. But be sure to check out the rest of the album. It’s fantastic! Wish I could see them in concert but I think my head banging concert days are over (if, in fact, I ever had them!).

Elizabeth and the Catapult focus on the songwriting skills of frontwoman Brooklynite Elizabeth Ziman. Her indie folk/pop style really sounds great, especially when she is bopping along at a good tempo. I am enjoying her 2017 release, Keepsake, where she puts her classical piano training and film scoring techniques to effective use. I really love the infectious Underwater:

Pale Waves, a Manchester UK quartet, is gaining quite a following for a band without even a proper release. Their Feb 2018 EP All the Things I Never Said got some ears perked and they have recently come out with a new video for their song Heavenly. I love their dreamy indie pop sound, heavy on the guitars and beat.

I really enjoyed Dungen’s 2017 release, Häxan and was excited to see a new song released by this group of Swedish rockers, who do a lot of ambient / jazzy / psychedelic rock songs. This is a cut from their upcoming release (I assume!), which will be out later this year on Mexican Summer records and will be called Myths 003. Here’s Loop:

And as an added bonus, here's my favorite cut from Häxan, called Achmed och Peri Banu. According to this article, Häxan is Swedish for "the witch" and Achmed and Peri Banu are characters in the oldest full length animated film, The Adventures of Prince Achmed, which they were asked to score. It's all pretty wonderful.

If you know me at at all, you know I like me some jangly guitars and heavy beats, all fronted by a hard playing woman, like say The Dollyrots or The Courtneys. So of course, I simply adore this song by Goat Girl, a London-based band who’s first full album isn’t due out until later this year. Well, that one certainly jumps to the top of my “Must Listen” list, now doesn’t it!
These days, the only remaining original is John Feldman, but he really carries off the entire album with aplomb. Lots of different styles here, from a straight out rocker like Am I Deaf, a speed rocker like the opener A Million Miles, all the way to my favorites, several reggae tinged songs, the highlight of which is Don’t Let Me Go :

A favorite artist from way back, Katie Herzig has a new album coming out in early 2018 called Moment of Bliss and has released the first single from it called Strangers. In many ways, it is a typical Herzig song, with her voice and lyrics giving it a combination of hope and melancholy, optimism and discontent, happiness and realism. I can’t wait to hear more.

Here’s Strangers:

His 2017 release, Versus, is pretty great. I guess him and bunch of other musicians (like a pianist and a French orchestra!) put on this fantastically well received live show and, rather than just create a live recording, they went into the studio and refined the sound for almost 10 years before releasing this. And it is well worth it. My electronica album of the year so far. This is the song Sandstorms which you can immediately tell features the orchestra, with some intense horns and some great synthesizer mixed in.

On their fifth album, Whiplash Splash, this duo of singer/guitarist Kelly Ogden and bassist/sometimes drummer Luis Cabezas pounds out a great sound, keeping the pedal to the metal and not letting up for the entire album. Just love it.

It is over 13 hours of music, with nearly 200 songs from the Alt, Rock, Pop, Country, Folk, Blues and Electronic genres. Well worth a listen!

One of my favorite tunes so far (done listening to about half the songs so far) is the song Ghost by the veteran Liverpool rockers Anathema. I guess they have changed their sound quite a bit over the past 30(!) years, from death/doom metal to the current introspective prog rock. And it is right up my alley. I immediately listened to the entire album, The Optimist and I think it will end up on my Top 10 album list. I guess it tells the tale of the unnamed protagonist from their 2001 release, A Fine Day To Exit, but each of the songs is a whole story unto itself. Ghost has Lee Douglas’ vocals hovering over a sad beat and dark piano, singing of, I think, a glimpse of the character:

This one, Eres by the LA sextet Ozomatli, really makes a hot afternoon dance. The whole album marries Mexican tunes with Jamaican rhythms and seems like it will be the perfect summer sound track.

One of my favorite albums of all time is Nick Lowe’s 1979 masterpiece, Labour Of Lust. Every song is a touch of indie pop magic. And I used to play this for my daughters incessantly, as he writes hooks that can entertain any age. I’ll bet I can play any of these songs and my girls would be able to sing along.

We used to play Cracking Up when my youngest used to do the same:

And I just adore the quick rhythm of Switchboard Susan:

And, of course, the fantastic album opener, the New Wave classic Cruel To Be Kind:

Interestingly enough, Nick’s backing band these days (he does “slower” stuff now), Los Straitjackets, has just released an album of Nick Lowe cover instrumentals called What’s So Funny About Peace, Love and Los Straightjackets?, with a languid yet powerful version of Cruel To Be Kind:

Wire is a seminal British band who just released an album celebrating their 40th year making music together - incredible! And it is actually a long lived band that I have followed for quite a while. I really enjoyed their 2015 release Wire and their 2016 release Nocturnal Koreans. My favorite cut from that album was the soft, brooding, and mysterious Forward Position:

The 2017 release is called Silver / Lead and is equally brooding and mysterious, albeit with a slightly more upbeat tone. My favorite cuts are Diamond In Cups and Forever & a Day:
